Geographical scope

The MONARPOP sampling network covers most of the alpine region.

Sampling sites are located in Austria, Germany, Italy, Slovenia and Switzerland.

MONARPOP

The network consists of 33 standard sites and 7 altitude profiles. A standard site is located at 1400 ± 150 a.s.l. An altitude profile is a regurlarly spaced series of 4–5 plots at increasing height. Three heavily instrumented sites above the timberline offer year-round air and deposition data.

MONARPOP sampling sites fulfil the following criteria:
  • absence of nearby emission sources
  • even distribution within the alpine range
  • elevation between 1250 m and 1550 m (except along height profiles)
  • location above the inversion layer
  • homogeneous, adult stands of Norway spruce
  • coincidence with existing research sites
